Founded in Autumn of 2018, Cruel Velvet began as a recording project between Josh Rodriguez (Xingaia, Age of Nefilim, Corpse Shadow) and Taylor D. Waring (Merlock, Carved in Bone, Baba Yaga) in Spokane, Washington after they met on
vampirefreaks.com. A cornucopia of goth-scapes, Cruel Velvet’s sound draws its primary influence from the Projekt: The New Face of Goth compilation distributed via Hot Topic in the early aughts. Waring’s lyrical musings focus on themes of vampirism and haunting, drawing heavy influence from Gothic literary heavy weights such as Edgar Allen Poe, Anne Rice, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Their first demo, “demonstration” explores these influences over three tracks. The single, “Angelus” is a driving goth-rock track with eldritch vocals, overdriven bass, swirling guitars, and bouncing keys. The demo also features a cover as Sisters of Mercy’s “Alice” and “A House Divided”, a brooding track in the same bloody vein as “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”. “demonstration” will be available via cassette in 2020.
Cruel Velvet is developing their live sound to perform in the Pacific Northwest in 2020 with the addition of Joel May (Sentient Divide). Cruel Velvet’s music is available on bandcamp. For booking, contact them through their Facebook page, email warint89@gmail.com, or send a messenger raven from your local Hot Topic.
